Win a Kindle + find out how Tina Donahue does a Wicked Takeover!

WICKED TAKEOVER

Blurb:

She’s just inherited a tattoo parlor…and the hunk who comes with it.

Lauren’s in a helluva mess. Not only has she lost her corporate job, her long-absent father just left her a struggling tattoo parlor along with the virile dude who runs it. Dante’s sinfully hot with a killer smile and inked biceps. Lauren’s full-figured, sorta pretty and wanting him badly. Dream on. She’s here to sell the place as quickly as possible for some much-needed cash.

Dante sees the heat in Lauren’s eyes despite her conservative appearance. He recognizes the dynamite woman she could be if she’d just loosen up and have some wicked fun. Dominance and submission. Making love in a public place. Having her lush body always accessible to and ready for his.

Carnal games that seduce them until lust turns to surprising need and friendship to something deeper that might just change their futures.

Excerpt:

At a sound from behind, she turned. A guy came down the hall, his attention on the clipboard he held.

Lauren’s heart stalled then raced.

She guessed him to be in his early thirties, a mountain of a man, possibly six-three, not a trace of fat on his hard body, just smooth bronze skin and slabs of muscles. Lord, lord, lord. He wore faded jeans and a gray sleeveless tee. His bulging biceps sported tats. The one on his right arm was an armband of what appeared to be thorns. The design on his left arm had a tribal look about it, possibly Celtic, a series of thick black swirls that intertwined.

Lauren pressed her toes into her heels to keep from swaying or moving closer.

His hair was shoulder length, like a pirate’s, a dark brown color, thick and silky that encouraged a woman to run her fingers through it to ease those strands away from his gorgeous face. Masculine. Decidedly Latin. Virile to the extreme. Even though it was barely two o’clock, he already had five o’clock shadow and more testosterone pumping through him than the law should have allowed.

She imagined him nude. Hell, she imagined both of them naked, his bristly cheeks tickling the insides of her thighs, his tongue lapping her cleft, settling on her clit but not rushing her climax. No damn way. Lauren figured a guy who looked as great as he did wouldn’t let her come quickly. He’d make her wait for pleasure. Once she was blubbering in delight, he’d bend her over the front counter and warn her to behave, which meant she couldn’t moan too loudly as he spanked her. Her cries of delight would come later when he plunged his meaty cock into her juicy cunt, taking what he wanted, because that’s the kind of man he was.

Uninhibited. Alpha to the core.

Lauren whimpered.

Despite the strains of Spanish guitars flowing from the sound system, he’d obviously heard the noise she’d made. Halting suddenly, he lifted his face, his dark brown eyes meeting hers. He smiled easily, confidently.

Her bones went soft.

“Hey,” he said.

Lauren’s belly fluttered at his deep, rich baritone.

Noting her office wear, he put the clipboard on the front counter and moved closer, his stride smooth and assured. His fragrance wafted toward her. Something clean and citrusy that reminded Lauren of summer days, an ocean breeze, sun baking naked skin.

She locked her knees to keep her balance. Her attention inched from his impressive Adam’s apple to his luscious mouth, his full, kissable lips.

“Did you lose your way?” he asked.

With him, any woman would. Not only was he beautiful, intelligence burned in his eyes and reflected in his surprisingly educated speech. “I’m sorry, what?”

He regarded her suit and heels. “Are you looking for another shop?”

“No.”

Surprise registered on his face. “You’re here for a tat?”

Lauren stared at the ones on his biceps, unable to help herself. Damn, they were hot. “Not exactly.”

He nodded. The ends of his hair swayed over his broad shoulders. Mesmerized, Lauren watched.

“A piercing?” he asked.

“What?”

“Are you here for a piercing?” He gestured to another wall filled with pictures. The muscles in his upper arm flexed.

Lauren bit back a sound of approval at that and the silky dark hair in his pit. She pictured her face pressed to it as she smelled his wonderful, male scent.

“You can see what we offer in those photos,” he said. “We also have binders of what we’ve done for past clients to give you an idea of what you might like.”

Lauren nodded absently, wondering if he was dating the young woman who’d left here earlier. If not, the spring in her step was probably from him inking a hidden part of her. “Do people really get their tongues tattooed?”

He grinned, showing perfect teeth. “You bet.”

“Why?”

He shrugged good-naturedly. “Why not?”

Clearly, he wasn’t uptight as she’d always been. How Lauren envied that. “Have you?”

“Have I what?”

“Had your tongue tattooed? Or are the ones on your arms all that you have?”

His smile broadened. He spoke conspiratorially. “I have another, though not on my tongue.”

Uh-huh. Lauren wondered if he’d inked his balls and cock, hoping he hadn’t. His equipment had to be as awesome as the rest of him. No way could anyone improve on nature’s perfection.

She sighed.

He regarded her thoughtfully, really taking in her short blonde hair, clothes and finally her features, including the small mole near the side of her mouth. There, he lingered, as though he liked the beauty mark.

Are you nuts? A guy like him? Get real.

He continued to study her mouth.

A wave of desire and embarrassment rushed through Lauren so quickly, her throat and cheeks got hot.

He smiled softly this time, as though he felt bad for making her uncomfortable. Lightly touching her arm, he murmured, “Let me get those binders so you can look through them.”

“No, don’t. Please. That’s not why I’m here.”

His dark eyebrows lifted a bit. “You’re selling something?” His attention went to her purse as though her product line was in there.

“Uh no. I’m here to take over.”

“Take over?”

“Uh-huh.”

He looked lost. “As in what?”

“This place.” At his continuing confusion, she blurted, “I own this place and everything in it, including you.”

Blurb:

Sophie Grant made a promise to her friend. She loves the comfort of her book store and has no desire what-so-ever to go on an adventure—not when she can read about them every day in a book.
But a promise is a promise.
After sticking a pin in a map she heads off to the Colorado Rockies.

High in the Colorado Rockies, world renowned photographer Jonas Hansen is healing from a personal loss. Will Sophie’s kind nature, love of photography, and beautiful smile make Jonas whole again?

Excerpt:

Sophie climbed the stairs and Jonas held the door open for her. He didn't leave a lot of room to get by and she could feel his breath across her neck as their bodies brushed. He removed the pack from her shoulder after she stepped inside and one of the straps snapped.

"That's a new backpack. I can't believe that just happened." At first, Sophie felt embarrassed, and then mad that her pack didn’t even last a day before something broke.
He laughed and pointed to a picnic-bench-style table. "Don't worry. I can fix it. Have a seat. Would you like a cup of coffee?"
Sophie took a deep breath and replied, "I'd love a cup. Heavy on the cream please." She sat and zipped her pocket before she removed her coat. Sophie didn't want any of her precious feathers to float away.
"That's how I drink my coffee, but I only have the powdered stuff. Is that all right?" Jonas asked as he laid her pack on the table.
"Sure. I'm not picky. I usually drink it out of my secondhand Mr. Coffee machine." Sophie had a hard time keeping her eyes off of Jonas. He took off his jacket and his large shoulders pulled at the fabric of his shirt, emphasizing the muscles in his back and arms. Talk about being unprofessional. She needed to stop ogling his body. To distract herself, she looked around the building. The interior reminded Sophie of a miniature ski lodge, except hiking poles and backpacks hung on the walls instead of skis and goggles.

"Here you go. The coffee is hot, but not necessarily good." His hand brushed hers as he pulled away.
"I'll take it hot over good any day." Too late, she realized how that might've sounded. The heat rose in her cheeks as she clarified, "I meant I like my coffee served hot."

For the love of animals, by Sharon Kleve
I’m asked on a regular basis why I have some sort of animal in every one of my books. It is simple…I love animals and I love writing about them. It doesn’t matter what kind, shape, or size. I love them all!
Throughout my life I’ve had dogs, birds, frogs, lizards, rabbits and of course precious cats. My husband and I have a dozen bird feeders, two water fountains and multiple yard-art fixtures that we put food and water in for the critters.
Several years ago our cat of fifteen years passed away and we were going to wait awhile before getting another one but as the days went on we missed having a cat. It was during the winter so there weren’t any kittens available. I searched all the shelters and saw pictures of an eight-month-old female, shorthair cat.
When we picked up Ardy from the Bremerton, WA PAWS, they said we'd never be able to pick her up or touch her. She'd been abused. My husband played with her and instantly fell in love. We took her home and after many months of special care, she loves to be held. We laugh because she likes it so much she won't let you put her down.
All animals deserve a little time, patience and a good loving home.
PAWS is a wonderful organization. To volunteer your time or donate: you can contact them at http://www.paws.org/
In my latest release is called, Love is in the Air. It is book 3 in the Places To See Series. Rex, Jonas's Bernese Mountain dog, plays a large part in relationship between Sophie and Jonas.

★ WIN A KINDLE & MANY MORE PRIZES ★ @BooksToGoNow gives their POV on Giving the Antagonist a POV!!

Giving the Antagonist a POV by Chris Karlsen

I read across the board genres, especially romances, thrillers, and historical fiction. I write paranormal romances and romantic thrillers. With my first two paranormal novels, Heroes Live Forever and Journey in Time, Point of View was limited to either the hero or heroine. The antagonist(s) in those stories were mainly the situations the hero and heroine found themselves in and had to overcome. On occasion, the situations generated villainous characters for them to encounter, but those characters did not have running roles throughout the stories.

In Knight Blindness, book three of my paranormal romance series, I took a somewhat different direction with the antagonist. Although he’s the hero’s nemesis, he is not a villain. Like the hero, he is a man who believes in his king’s cause, a man who goes into battle to fight for his country. During the course of the story, he goes from battlefield enemy to dogged pursuer of the hero. I knew as the plot progressed that I wanted him to be as three-dimensional and fleshed out as the hero. That meant giving him a POV, a personal history. Like the hero, he too generated a lot of reader comments. He evoked some strong feelings, some really disliked him and others felt a connection, a certain empathy for him.

I didn’t realize when I started the book that building a world, a backstory for him to create a credible POV, would open the door to a potential story where he is the hero.

Golden Chariot and Byzantine Gold, the romantic thrillers, had definite antagonists. They were cunning and dangerous people who placed the protagonists in perilous circumstances. These are not characters out of a Criminal Minds episode driven by blood lust. They’re men with an agenda. They have a goal and what they consider a logical purpose for their actions. Whether it’s for revenge, financial gain, or for a cause they believe in, they feel justified in everything they do.

Golden Chariot has three antagonists. Two are the masterminds behind the artifact smuggling operation. The third is a contract killer hired by the other two. When one of the conspirators orders an government agent murdered without the other’s knowledge, the co-conspirator is incensed. Their entire scheme nearly falls apart, a situation the man who ordered the murder can’t afford to have happen. I needed to give him an extraordinary reason for taking this risk. To justify his actions, he required a POV. Taking a path less traveled by handing the antagonist this power can be surprising fun, it can be enlightening for both the author and the reader. What resulted was suddenly seeing both the man behind the murder and the victim in a different light. That didn’t change the fact the killing was wrong, but it helped to understand why the man ordered the murder.

I also gave the contract killer a POV. The reader sees him exactly for what he is: a man who kills for profit. He doesn’t moralize about his business or try to justify his actions. He is what he is, most of the time. In addition to POV, I gave him moments of surprise for the reader. There is one scene where he performs a random act of kindness, totally unexpected for the amoral and generally cruel man.

In another scene we see him at home. Through the eyes of the heroine, we see his taste in furniture, in music, in something as simple as fine crystal. It is easy to forget the antagonist has a mother, possibly siblings, food he/she likes, a certain style of décor or clothing. Those reveals can pull a reader closer to the story. The enemy isn’t an indistinct, vacuous man or woman who is just evil. They have personality and that personality can go many directions.

This same killer returns in Byzantine Gold, the sequel to Golden Chariot. For that story, I took him a step further and gave him a love interest. This is by no means a man who desires love or even has the capacity to give it in any deep way. As mentioned, he is amoral and without the warmth of character. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a woman who finds a way to love him. In this book, he finds himself attracted to a young woman and he chooses to let her travel with him. They share moments where he is true to his nature and brutal to her. There are other moments where he has the opportunity to show an unexpected kinder side of himself.

Byzantine Gold also has a political terrorist who shares the role of antagonist. As horrifying as terrorism is to us, to him, his cause is righteous and he will do anything he must to achieve his goal.

Giving the antagonist(s) in these last two books POVs has also generated commentary from readers and reviewers. They were by no means sympathetic to the characters (I hadn’t intended them to be) but were intrigued seeing the character fleshed out in a way where their motivation was not excused but understood. They became three dimensional for the reader. The antagonist’s POV is not often shown and as a result these men stood out. One reviewer emailed me privately and said: the relationship between the killer and the young woman in Byzantine Gold had him wondering at times what the killer might’ve been like had he met someone like her sooner. Knowing the killer as well as I do, I’d have to say I doubt he’d be any different. What was important, in my opinion, was the fact the question was raised and that he created interest beyond the norm.

To me one of the great antagonist/villains of recent years was Tony Soprano. He was the villain you hated to love. Week after week, we’d see him kill people, order people killed, engage in all sorts of illegal activity, and take every possible opportunity to cheat on his loving wife. On the face of it, one would think it unimaginable to like this man. Yet...what else did the writer’s show? The audience saw a man who loved the ducks who landed in his pool. They saw a man who suffered anxiety attacks and sought the services of a psychiatrist. They saw a man who adored and protected his daughter, felt disappointment in the son he had high hopes for, who looked after his unpleasant mother and annoying sister. And deep down, at times, we embraced him. When Dr. Melfi was raped and beaten, and Tony came to his appointment while she was still injured, didn’t most of us say aloud, “tell him, tell Tony who did this to you. He’ll take care of the brute.” I, for one, was very disappointed she didn’t.

Antagonists can be humorous, intelligent, surprising, and have all sorts of quirks. All of which can make a story much richer, if we give them a voice and POV.

Alpha Dogs and Thiefs of Souls with J. Hali Steele + Win a Kindle

Did you ever wonder what a character from one book might say to another book’s character—or to you if you sat down to have a chat with them? I gave it a try recently, and dang, I felt lucky to get out alive!

Meet Harm Germaine of Controlled-Shepherd’s Watch 4, the always in control alpha dog, and Ion Toso of Healing Hell, pretty boy, and a thief of souls. Let’s see where this takes us.

Harm glanced at author. “Can we move this along, I have a company to run.”

“Jesus, man, you have to work for a living?” Ion ran fingers through his dark hair, making sure the stray curl stayed in place.

Gods, these guys were beautiful and the power in the room was palpable. “Harm, tell us a little about yourself.”

“I run Shepherd’s Watch, a company that provides guard services for the rich and powerful around the world.”

“I’ve never heard of you.” Ion pinched the creases of his pants and grinned. “Or your company.”

“Maybe you’re not rich or powerful enough.” Harm smiled but it never reached his golden brown eyes. “What do you do for a living aside from be pretty.”

That wiped the grin from Ion’s face. “Do you know what I am?”

“Friend, I’ll tear your throat out before you can even move.” Ion’s eyes filled with tiny pinpoints of white light. “And save that squirrely eye shit for humans.” A low growl emanated from Harm’s throat as he leaned forward. “It doesn’t work on my animal’s dysfunctional brain.”

“Oh, I haven’t tried anything yet.” Ion stood. “Because I’d have your dog groveling…”

“Gentlemen, please!” Author nervously tapped her pen on the tablet.

“Okay okay, I’ll be nice to the pooch if he’s nice to me.”

Harm laughed. “That’s rich. Be nice to someone who survives by sucking the souls from humans.”

“Like snatching someone’s throat out is a good thing.” Ion returned to his seat and stretched his long legs. “I guess being able to shift into another form could come in handy though.”

“It does.” Harm settled back. “However, appearing naked in the town square has drawbacks.”

“Shit! When you change back into human form, you’re butt ass naked?”

Harm winked, “Gives the ladies something to talk about.”

“I’ll be damn, you are a dog.”

“I’m a shepherd, thief, don’t get it twisted.”

“I’m Essentiant.” Ion shrugged. “And a soul is a terrible thing to waste.”

Both men laughed and the sound eerily filled the room as they turned to stare at her.

Time to end this. “Well, now that we know exactly what you both are capable of, thank you for coming.” Author rose and quickly walked across the room. “I’ve got to run.” Reaching the restroom, author slammed and locked the door. “Scary ass men.” Turning, author saw two gorgeous women peering at her as if she were crazed. “What?”

The first to speak was short and curvy with blonde hair and blue eyes. “One had mesmerizing gray eyes that shot little white lights all over the place, right?”

“And the other one had a controlling as hell attitude and he growled?” This lady had dark wavy hair, hazel eyes, and she was petite.

“You saw the bastards too?” Author breathed a sigh of relief at finding someone else who understood.

Both women laughed and replied in unison. “You met our husbands.”

Shit!
