Unforgivable

Nola Lester finally had enough of life in the city's fast lane. She needed to get away, get back to her roots, but tending a wounded hunter whose controlling and charismatic personality triggered strange desires threatened Nola's plans. Perhaps changing her agenda may not be such a bad idea.

Rand Mitchell anticipated relaxing in the secluded mountains he felt drawn to year after year. There would be no rescuing animals or hunting humans, just peace and quiet while searching for clues to explain the mystery of who he is. Instead, Rand found himself ensnared by a sharp-tongued spitfire more than willing to provide a diversion.

Neither of them knew what a deadly creature she held in the palm of her hand.

★ WIN A KINDLE & MANY MORE PRIZES ★ @BooksToGoNow gives their POV on Giving the Antagonist a POV!!

Giving the Antagonist a POV by Chris Karlsen

I read across the board genres, especially romances, thrillers, and historical fiction. I write paranormal romances and romantic thrillers. With my first two paranormal novels, Heroes Live Forever and Journey in Time, Point of View was limited to either the hero or heroine. The antagonist(s) in those stories were mainly the situations the hero and heroine found themselves in and had to overcome. On occasion, the situations generated villainous characters for them to encounter, but those characters did not have running roles throughout the stories.

In Knight Blindness, book three of my paranormal romance series, I took a somewhat different direction with the antagonist. Although he’s the hero’s nemesis, he is not a villain. Like the hero, he is a man who believes in his king’s cause, a man who goes into battle to fight for his country. During the course of the story, he goes from battlefield enemy to dogged pursuer of the hero. I knew as the plot progressed that I wanted him to be as three-dimensional and fleshed out as the hero. That meant giving him a POV, a personal history. Like the hero, he too generated a lot of reader comments. He evoked some strong feelings, some really disliked him and others felt a connection, a certain empathy for him.

I didn’t realize when I started the book that building a world, a backstory for him to create a credible POV, would open the door to a potential story where he is the hero.

Golden Chariot and Byzantine Gold, the romantic thrillers, had definite antagonists. They were cunning and dangerous people who placed the protagonists in perilous circumstances. These are not characters out of a Criminal Minds episode driven by blood lust. They’re men with an agenda. They have a goal and what they consider a logical purpose for their actions. Whether it’s for revenge, financial gain, or for a cause they believe in, they feel justified in everything they do.

Golden Chariot has three antagonists. Two are the masterminds behind the artifact smuggling operation. The third is a contract killer hired by the other two. When one of the conspirators orders an government agent murdered without the other’s knowledge, the co-conspirator is incensed. Their entire scheme nearly falls apart, a situation the man who ordered the murder can’t afford to have happen. I needed to give him an extraordinary reason for taking this risk. To justify his actions, he required a POV. Taking a path less traveled by handing the antagonist this power can be surprising fun, it can be enlightening for both the author and the reader. What resulted was suddenly seeing both the man behind the murder and the victim in a different light. That didn’t change the fact the killing was wrong, but it helped to understand why the man ordered the murder.

I also gave the contract killer a POV. The reader sees him exactly for what he is: a man who kills for profit. He doesn’t moralize about his business or try to justify his actions. He is what he is, most of the time. In addition to POV, I gave him moments of surprise for the reader. There is one scene where he performs a random act of kindness, totally unexpected for the amoral and generally cruel man.

In another scene we see him at home. Through the eyes of the heroine, we see his taste in furniture, in music, in something as simple as fine crystal. It is easy to forget the antagonist has a mother, possibly siblings, food he/she likes, a certain style of décor or clothing. Those reveals can pull a reader closer to the story. The enemy isn’t an indistinct, vacuous man or woman who is just evil. They have personality and that personality can go many directions.

This same killer returns in Byzantine Gold, the sequel to Golden Chariot. For that story, I took him a step further and gave him a love interest. This is by no means a man who desires love or even has the capacity to give it in any deep way. As mentioned, he is amoral and without the warmth of character. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a woman who finds a way to love him. In this book, he finds himself attracted to a young woman and he chooses to let her travel with him. They share moments where he is true to his nature and brutal to her. There are other moments where he has the opportunity to show an unexpected kinder side of himself.

Byzantine Gold also has a political terrorist who shares the role of antagonist. As horrifying as terrorism is to us, to him, his cause is righteous and he will do anything he must to achieve his goal.

Giving the antagonist(s) in these last two books POVs has also generated commentary from readers and reviewers. They were by no means sympathetic to the characters (I hadn’t intended them to be) but were intrigued seeing the character fleshed out in a way where their motivation was not excused but understood. They became three dimensional for the reader. The antagonist’s POV is not often shown and as a result these men stood out. One reviewer emailed me privately and said: the relationship between the killer and the young woman in Byzantine Gold had him wondering at times what the killer might’ve been like had he met someone like her sooner. Knowing the killer as well as I do, I’d have to say I doubt he’d be any different. What was important, in my opinion, was the fact the question was raised and that he created interest beyond the norm.

To me one of the great antagonist/villains of recent years was Tony Soprano. He was the villain you hated to love. Week after week, we’d see him kill people, order people killed, engage in all sorts of illegal activity, and take every possible opportunity to cheat on his loving wife. On the face of it, one would think it unimaginable to like this man. Yet...what else did the writer’s show? The audience saw a man who loved the ducks who landed in his pool. They saw a man who suffered anxiety attacks and sought the services of a psychiatrist. They saw a man who adored and protected his daughter, felt disappointment in the son he had high hopes for, who looked after his unpleasant mother and annoying sister. And deep down, at times, we embraced him. When Dr. Melfi was raped and beaten, and Tony came to his appointment while she was still injured, didn’t most of us say aloud, “tell him, tell Tony who did this to you. He’ll take care of the brute.” I, for one, was very disappointed she didn’t.

Antagonists can be humorous, intelligent, surprising, and have all sorts of quirks. All of which can make a story much richer, if we give them a voice and POV.

★ WIN A KINDLE & MANY MORE PRIZES ★ @BooksToGoNow is gettin social! 10 Great Reasons to Blog!!

The importance of social media to an author, by Sharon Kleve

I found this great article by Andrew Grant published on July 1st 2013 on why you should have a Blog and thought it was excellent. http://www.projecteve.com/why-you-should-have-a-blog-10-great-reasons/

Why You Should Have a Blog – 10 Great Reasons

1 – Everybody is interested in something

And doing that favorite something is the quickest path to happiness and fulfillment that I know of. Therefore, it’s logical to conclude that writing a blog about that something is probably the most accessible way to make money around your favorite way of spending time.

2 – A blog will make you friends

The very essence of a blog is that it will attract people who like the same things as you. They may see them very differently and they may well not agree with everything you say, but they will definitely share your interests. Isn’t that the very definition of friendships?

3 – Blogging encourages your creativity

Even if you don’t think of yourself as creative, I am willing to bet that if you set yourself the challenge of writing three short blog posts about something you love, you will be amazed at how creative you can be.

4 – Owning a blog gives you motivation.

Once you begin to see the fruits of your efforts and especially when you start to get positive feedback from people you have never met, you will find that what looked like an onerous task at the outset is suddenly a pleasure to do – you can’t wait to see what your loyal readers will think of your latest post.

5 – Blogging gives you self-discipline

Once you set yourself a schedule to regularly blog, you feel a responsibility to your readers to deliver on your commitment, but it’s a pleasure not a stress, because you know they are enthusiastically waiting for what you give them.

6 – Blogging keeps you sharp.

If you write a how-to blog, like mine, then you will be honing your skills of research and summation. If your blog is more opinion based, then you need to keep abreast of other views and the latest developments in your field so that you can comment on them with authority. You’ll find your thinking skills get keener and your ability to filter good information from bad gets a lot more efficient.

7 – Blogging is rewarding

I guarantee that the best thing you will get from blogging is the satisfaction of making a difference to someone else’s life no matter how minor that difference might be. From a grateful reader telling you how much they enjoyed following one of your patterns to the person making their first few dollars online. The moment when you read their heartfelt email will be one of the high-points of your week.

8 – A blog is a test-bed.

Once you start to build an audience, your blog will become the place where you can try stuff out. You can ask their opinion on your plans and projects, test different offers with them and best of all you can get them to tell you what they need so you can make a product that suits, safe in the knowledge that as soon as you do, they are going to be the first ones to buy it.

9 – You don’t need to be a good writer.

No matter how poor you think your writing skills are, I absolutely encourage you to just get stuck in and start writing immediately. There are some great blogs out there written by people who are nowhere near polished, but they write with an intensity that makes that meaningless. In fact if they improved their writing, their blogs probably wouldn’t be as good. Their passion shines through.

10 – Google loves bloggers

Every post you write, every picture you link and every comment you receive is another little building brick in the great structure of your credibility. The great bloggers out there have built their authority, their popularity and their credibility, by doing one thing well and doing it regularly. Creating stuff that people want to read, watch, listen to and act upon. Ike the movie said, “If you build it they will come,” and that was never more appropriate than when applied to blogging.

Quite simply, a blog is the best and most long-term profitable way to spend your time on the internet, bar none.

This YouTube video is a simple step-by-step instruction on how to set-up a Blog on Blogger.

★ WIN A KINDLE & MANY MORE PRIZES ★ @BooksToGoNow shares The Story Behind The Story! Find out more about Knight Blindness here!!

The Story Behind the Story (Knight Blindness) by Chris Karlsen

Time travel is a fascination of mine and has been since I was a young girl. The concept and the possibilities have captivated the imagination of many of us for generations. Chatting with friends, the idea of going back in time is favored over travelling forward but not by much. The folks I know who have a strong interest in history lean toward returning to a time and place where they can meet history’s most famous men and women. Those friends have a select group of people they wish to see in action or even talk with provided they weren’t put in danger by doing so. My friends who love all things sci-fi wouldn’t hesitate to go into the future.

As for me, I have mixed feelings. I love history and would like to touchdown in different time periods, see how the people of the time who interest me interact and how they lived. Having the ability to convince them to talk to me and not burn me at the stake as a witch or throw me into a dungeon gives me pause. Deep down, I suspect discovery of my presence wouldn’t work out well for me. My sci-fi friends envision a brilliant Star Trek type future. Me—not so much, I watched too many Twilight Zone shows and Planet of the Apes movies to trust that the future offers greater safety. That said, it doesn’t mean I don’t want the time travel experience. The solution: live through my characters.

I have the freedom of going wherever I want and enjoy putting my spin on the timeframe the protagonists are moving through. In Journey in Time, book two of my Knights in Time series, I sent the hero and heroine back to medieval England. To the heroine’s surprise, this is a period the hero is very familiar with on a personal level. The heroine knows only what she learned in school and what she’s observed in museums and from historical sites. With each support character she encountered, with each situation she found herself, I made it a point to have her share my fears and my amazement.

Knight Blindness wasn’t planned as part of the series. Stephen, the hero in Knight Blindness was a knight and friend of Guy’s the hero in Journey in Time. I really liked Stephen. He was loyal, chivalrous, funny, and attractive. I gave a decent amount of page time (which he shared with other characters) to him in the book.

As much as I liked him, I eventually killed him in battle (off page). The ladies in my critique group were up in arms. They all turned to me and asked how could you? We adore Stephen. You must bring him back.

I did and didn’t. I wrote the last scene between him and the hero in a way that left the question whether he survived or not. When the time came to write the next story in the series, it occurred to me to use Stephen. He was a popular character so why not give him a story of his own. I knew I’d make him a time traveler but I wanted to switch it up. I didn’t want to take him and the heroine back in time. Instead, I brought him forward to our time. I also knew I wanted to work in the final words between him and Guy. I wanted that exchange to have more meaning than most. Playing off that, I decided to make the modern world as difficult as possible for Stephen. I wanted to go beyond the lack of understanding for this world. To accomplish that, I made him blind.

I can truly say, we were both challenged by this twist. It took me a long time to write. It wasn’t just a case of Stephen having no context for much of what he encountered but I had to visualize how he’d interpret an environment he cannot see.

Unknown to Stephen, the enemy knight who wounded him has also come forward in time. He has his sight but has his own “demons” to overcome if he wants to function in this new world.

This was a lot an unusual experience as I had to spend so much time in the head of two main characters, where the second character was not the heroine. Roger, the French enemy knight, has a strong POV. I think that made a great dynamic in the relationship between the two men.

That’s the thumbnail of the story behind the story. I hope you found reading about my path from start to finish interesting or at least humorous.

★ WIN A KINDLE & MANY MORE PRIZES ★ @BooksToGoNow on Writing a Series! When The End isn't the end!

Writing a Series by Jennifer Conner

Writing a series can be just as much fun for the readers as it is for the writers. As a reader, I love books that don’t end when you turn the last page. My favorites often continue with the same characters. My favorites are Clarie and Jamie from the Outlander books or Eve and Roarke from Nora Roberts In Death Series. Both married couples who argue, make mistakes and are madly in love after MANY books.

I may not have started with the concept of making a story a series, but as I wrote, I started to think of story lines with brothers, sisters, or best-friends who were introduced. What was there story? Was it worth telling?

Sometimes my stories are stand-alone with the tread being a concept. In The Love List, I am writing with 3 other writers, but with a common story thread. With my Dog Tails series the characters in the various stories are not related, but have a common thread, they are all dog owners. Book one, Central bark at Christmas addresses abandoned pets and shelters, Book two, Christmas Gift that Keeps Wagging, covers trained seizure dogs and a single dad with a special need little boy. Book three, Dog Tags, will be an Army man with a dog he is trying to get home that he rescues in Afghanistan.

But in my Regimental Heroes series, they are all friends who suffer from PTSD in Victorian England. Best-friends, and then his brother and another friend with dyslexia. All brought together by the common thread of war and the era that does not understand what they are going through.

What do you like to read? Stand-alone stories or if you enjoy it, do you want it to go on and on like I do?

★ WIN A KINDLE & MANY MORE PRIZES ★ @BooksToGoNow tells us Why! Joanne Jaytanie shares why she writes!

Why Do I Write, by Joanne Jaytanie

One of the most popular questions I get asked is why I write. I write because I love it! I have loved writing since my freshman year in high school. But instead of following my dream I went to college for business and got my BA. I spent years in business administration, personnel, and finance for a variety of companies, including our own business.

Ten years after starting our accident reconstruction firm, my husband decided he had enough of running his own company and longed to return to marine engineering. That was a difficult time for me. Along with dealing with the loss of our business, I found myself with no job and not sure what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So I focused on my love of dogs. I went back to the obedience ring and then became infatuated with the breed ring. I bred and showed Dobermans for fifteen years, with the idea of applying for my Confirmation Judge license. All the while the need to write constantly pushed at me. One day, while filling out part of my judge application I realized that if I continued on that course I would be completely engulfed in that world and my writing would once again be pushed back to – some day.  I finally realized that if I didn’t focus on my dream today, it would slip away forever. I didn’t want to wake up one day and wonder why I never worked at the one thing I loved most to do.

I love writing. I do it when I’m sad, happy, busy, and lonely. Writing makes me happy. I submerge myself in the world of my characters. I live and breathe their lives and marvel at their decisions and predicaments. How lucky am I to know what it is I want to do ‘when I grow up’ and to absolutely love doing it.

Bio:

Joanne was born and raised in Sherburne, New York, a quaint village surrounded by dairy farms and rolling hills. From the moment she could read she wanted to explore the world. During her college years she slowly crept across the country, stopping along the way in Oklahoma, California, and finally Washington State, which she now proudly calls home. She lives with her husband and Dobermans, in their home located on the Kitsap Peninsula with a panoramic view of the Olympic Mountains.

Joanne writes paranormal, romantic suspense. She loves writing about the twists and turns of her character’s lives and the trouble they find themselves involved in, coupled with building an everlasting relationship. She enjoys a wide variety of books including paranormal, suspense, thriller, and most of all romance.

Joanne is a member of Romance Writers of America, and an active member of Debbie Macomber’s home chapter, Peninsula Romance Writers, where she currently serves as the President.
